Give your living room style and impact with treasured mementos and injections of black.
Sometimes a room that lifts your energy is just what you need, like the living room of The Affordable Style Files' interior designer Hong Henwood. Here black walls provide a jumping-off point to let Henwood's sculpture collection take centre stage. To create impact in your own sitting room begin with a base palette that you love, Henwood advises. "I've chosen colours that work for me - pink, black, white and naturals," she says. "Building layers within these colour blocks helps me create a cohesive home." Try looking at what you already own to work out themes or colours that you can build on. "Over the years I've collected items I've fallen in love with that create all my shelfies and pockets in my home," Henwood says. There is little that will add more drama to a room than bold black and white patterns or animal print - choose one that speaks to you, she advises. "Since I love black and white, I love zebra prints, and it works well in my home," she says. "If you want more colourful taste in decor, choose a print that works well with that. For example, if you love cheetah print and also love pink, Schumacher fabrics does a hot pink cheetah print. Make small additions first, either by adding a cushion with that print, a lampshade or even a vase."
